ITU-T
International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standardization Sector
Within ITU-T, M2MTech is actively taking part in the standardization work of SG20 for IoT and smart cities and SG17 for security.
ITU-T SG20
International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standardization Sector Study Group 20
ITU-T SG20 is the key study group responsible for international standardization of the Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins and smart sustainable cities and communities (SSC&C).
- Scope of workSG20 develops international standards for smart city infrastructure and applications built on emerging technologies such as IoT, edge computing, artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins and the citiverse. It addresses the architecture and interoperability needed when infrastructures as different as buildings, transport, energy and water supply are brought together into a single city system.M2MTech
In this study group, M2MTech carried the IoT standard for lift equipment from start to finish — one continuous line from the R&D project to international approval and on into Korean standards.
- 2018 – 2020Standards development projectWe ran the Ministry of Science and ICT project “Development of IoT Gateway Protocol and Data Model Standards for Smart Elevators” jointly with ETRI.
- 2019. 12Contribution to Y-series Supplement 56We contributed a smart elevator monitoring use case for smart cities jointly with ETRI.
- 2021. 7Approval of Y.4420Approved at the SG20 international meeting — the first time a lift monitoring framework developed in Korea became an international standard.
- 2023 – 2024Carried into Korean standardsRather than stopping at the international standard, we extended it to TTA standards and the national standards KS B 6921 and 6922, so Korean industry can work to the same criteria.
- 2025Presentation in GenevaAt the international standards meeting in Geneva, we presented “Sustainable Cities Run on Standards: Proven by ITU-T SG20”.
The standards we wrote did not stay on paper — they are implemented as-is in ELSA IoT Gateway and Edge.
- Lead study group forAreas in which ITU-T has designated SG20 to lead and coordinate work across the other study groups:
- IoT and Identification
- Internet of Things and Its Application
- Digital Health related to IoT and SSC&C
- SSC&C, digital services, energy management, digital twin & citiverse
M2MTech standards from ITU-T SG20
Y.4420
Framework of Internet of things based monitoring and management for lifts
ITU-T Y.4420 is an international Recommendation that defines the architecture and functional requirements between the controller and the IoT gateway, together with a common serial communication protocol and data model.
- BackgroundBecause each manufacturer used its own data model and protocol, equipment within a building was hard to integrate. The goal was to enable the digital transformation of equipment safety and remote maintenance in what had been a closed ecosystem.
- DevelopmentMore than 30 organizations took part in the dedicated standards committee, from large companies such as Hyundai Elevator, Otis and TKE to SMEs, the Korean Society of Elevator Engineering and the Korea Elevator Safety Agency. Within it, it was M2MTech and ETRI that designed the technical content of the draft, proposed it to ITU-T and carried it through to approval; the participating organizations handled review and consensus.
- ApprovalApproved by ITU-T SG20 in July 2021; the current edition is dated May 2026. Co-developed by M2MTech and ETRI.
Y-series Supplement 56
Ahead of the approval of Y.4420, in December 2019 we contributed a use case jointly with ETRI. It pointed out that equipment unable to connect directly to telecommunication networks keeps running into interoperability problems because each manufacturer uses its own format, and proposed a gateway using a common protocol together with a web-based monitoring setup.
ITU-T SG17
Study Group 17 – Security
ITU-T SG17 is the study group responsible for international standardization in security, so that telecommunications and ICT can be used safely.
- Scope of workSG17 covers seven areas: security models and architecture, cybersecurity, security management, device, edge, network, cloud and application security, data protection technologies, security for emerging technologies, and open systems interconnection. The international standards it publishes carry X-series numbers.M2MTechConnecting infrastructure to external networks also opens paths for remote diagnosis and control — the point at which safety functions themselves become a security concern. M2MTech takes part in standardizing the security requirements for the segments between equipment and gateway and between gateway and cloud, and continues the same work in ISO/TC 178 WG 12 and TTA PG504. ELSA was designed to reflect the security requirements of these segments and has been verified through IETF CoAP interoperability testing.
