Standardization

Not technology that follows standards,
but technology that sets them

M2MTech builds the technology that connects physical infrastructure through data. Together with ETRI, we turned the connection methods that differed from one manufacturer to the next into a single common language, established it as an ITU-T international standard, and carried the same criteria into national and association standards.

International Standardization

ISO

International Organization for Standardization

What is it?The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent international body that develops internationally recognized standards across a wide range of industries. Each field is covered by a Technical Committee (TC), under which Working Groups (WG) develop the detailed technical content.

Working GroupThe committee is divided into ten working groups by technical area. M2MTech takes part in two of them.

The other eight

  • WG 1 Lifts on ships
  • WG 4 Safety requirements

ISO/TC 178

Technical Committee 178 – Lifts, escalators and moving walks

ISO/TC 178 is the ISO technical committee that addresses the safety and technical requirements of lifts, service lifts, escalators and passenger conveyors.

  • Scope of work
TC 178 covers the safety requirements and risk assessment of the equipment itself, as well as installation, electrical requirements, ride quality measurement and energy efficiency. Mine lifts and continuous mechanical handling equipment are out of scope. Where ITU-T looks at infrastructure from the communication and data side, TC 178 looks at the equipment itself.

WG 12 · Cybersecurity

Working Group 12 – Cybersecurity

ISO/TC 178 WG 12 is the working group that addresses cybersecurity requirements for lift equipment connected to external systems.

  • Scope of work
As equipment connects to building networks and the cloud, lifts are no longer closed machines. WG 12 turns the problems created by that shift into standards. Its flagship standard is ISO 8102-20, which sets minimum protection levels for essential, safety and alarm functions of equipment that can be connected to external systems. A revision is currently under way.
M2MTechM2MTech addresses the security boundary from the side that connects equipment to external systems. Drawing on operational cases, it proposes approaches to device authentication, data integrity, protection in transit and separation of privileges for remote diagnosis and control across the segments from controller to IoT gateway and from gateway to cloud. The task is to make protection levels written for new installations applicable to equipment already in service.

WG 13 · New Technologies

Working Group 13 – New Technologies

ISO/TC 178 WG 13 is the working group that standardizes new technologies applied to lift equipment.

  • Scope of work
WG 13 discusses topics that are hard to handle within the framework of existing safety codes, such as remote monitoring and predictive maintenance, AI-based analytics and the integration of robots with equipment. It is where the shift of equipment from machines to data-generating assets is addressed.
M2MTechM2MTech brings its gateway standardization experience — from Y.4420 through to Korea’s KS standards — into discussions on new equipment technologies, taking part in work on monitoring data models, condition diagnosis and predictive maintenance, and robot and mobility integration.
